Bachelors of Nursing

The Bachelors of Nursing program serves as the foundation for collaborative care through direct care delivery, leadership and management roles in nursing, and progression to graduate studies. An ability to delegate care and work in an interdisciplinary team is integral to this approach. A typical undergraduate nursing education is built upon a solid foundation of general education requirements that includes course work in the foundational knowledge areas of communication, culture and history, mathematics, behavioral, natural and social sciences. Courses and laboratory experiences in the major reflect a community-oriented approach, which are applied across the continuum of care and throughout the lifespan. The curriculum and progression of learning experiences prepare the graduate to meet health promotion, restoration and rehabilitative needs of clients.

Students might be recent high college graduates for whom this is their first time in college, or individuals who have completed prior course work which may have resulted in receipt of a diploma in nursing or Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, baccalaureate or graduate degrees.

According to a 2004 survey from the American Association of Medical Colleges, only 3.5% of U.S. physicians are black, while blacks make up 12.3% of the U.S. population. There is a similar gap among Hispanic doctors and the Hispanic population in the U.S., according to the editorial. In 1975, the proportion of medical school students who were minority students peaked at 8.1%, though that percentage has “leveled off and … might have fallen,” according to an East Brunswick Home News Tribune editorial.

Nursing Informatics

According to William Goossen, author of the article Nursing information management and processing: a framework and definition for systems analysis, design and evaluation:

“Nursing informatics is the multidisciplinary scientific endeavor of analyzing, formalizing and modeling how nurses collect and manage data, process data into information and knowledge, make knowledge-based decisions and inferences for patient care, and use this empirical and experiential knowledge in order to broaden the scope and enhance the quality of their professional practice. The scientific methods central to nursing informatics are focused on:

  1. Using a discourse about motives for computerized systems,
  2. Analyzing, formalizing and modeling nursing information processing and nursing knowledge for all components of nursing practice: clinical practice, management, education and research,
  3. Investigating determinants, conditions, elements, models and processes in order to design, and implement as well as test the effectiveness and efficiency of computerized information, (tele)communication and network systems for nursing practice, and
  4. Studying the effects of these systems on nursing practice.”

Medical Informatics

Medical informatics or Health informatics is the intersection of information science, computer science and health care. It deals with the resources, devices and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics tools include not only computers but also clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems.

Many people who train in medical informatics have professional degrees in a health related area. Nurses, physicians, medical librarians, and computer scientists will each find their professional niche in a different area: Consultants with management consulting firms, hospital record managers, data analysts, librarians, senior staff in state health departments, programmer/analysts in industry, and just good old family physicians.
