According to the American Nurses Association, only six percent of all nurses are men. This all comes in the face of an impending baby boomer generation on the brink of retirement, foreshadowing an increased need for qualified nursing care. Not surprisingly, the Department of Labor has listed registered nursing as the top occupation for job growth through at least the next decade, with over one million new and replacement nursing positions opening up during this time.

There has been no reasonable effort to encourage men to enter nursing. In fact, there have been efforts to keep men out of nursing. We have no laws promulgated to protect men from discrimination in nursing education nor employment. In fact, if a male nurse or nursing student does not publically assert the following “politically correct”, Orwellian, discriminatory, sexist, illogical, irrational and oppressive mantra, he will face additional discrimination in nursing: “Men are not discriminated against in education nor employment (including nursing). Therefore, they do not need laws nor the promulgation of laws protecting them from this discrimination. Women (and minorities) are discriminated against in employment and education (including nursing). Therefore, the same should receive preferential treatment in employment and education.”
I am a male R.N..
Males leave nursing at twice the rate as women do. Males leave nursing school at a higher rate than female nurses do. Males only represent about 6% of nurses.
Given the aforementioned, men have made a logical choice.
Only when our laws and customs give men the same legal rights to employment and education as women in nursing concommitant with protections against discrimination in the same, can you expect the percentage of men in nursing to increase.

I am a student at nestucca valley high school and I want to be a nurse are something close to that. People tell me I cant and I say yeah I can what ever I put my mind to I can do it…..Plus I like the fact of helping other people
I am a 37 yr old male that has recently completed a CNA course in college and will proceed to take the required courses to attend RN courses. I am currently working weekends as a CNA in a nursing home facility. I have honestly never found anything as rewarding as helping others. I have found that the women I work with encourage me to continue with school and are more supportive than my previous experiences in a male dominated work force. So good luck to ya’ll and study hard it is worth it.
I’ve been a RN for 11 years now. This wasn’t the original plan. Now I am envolved in getting my BSN. I am inquiring about researching the role Male RNs play. I’d like to know what specifically should be researched when it comes to this topic in the eyes of other male nurses. Any help from other Males on this topic would be appreciated. I’m an advocate for males in nursing. I feel they (we) contribute a lot and perhaps more than most would admit to the profession. Any questions, comments, concerns that should be researched? you may email me directly at Miragexl007@aol.com
