Medical Informatics

Medical informatics or Health informatics is the intersection of information science, computer science and health care. It deals with the resources, devices and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics tools include not only computers but also clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems.

Many people who train in medical informatics have professional degrees in a health related area. Nurses, physicians, medical librarians, and computer scientists will each find their professional niche in a different area: Consultants with management consulting firms, hospital record managers, data analysts, librarians, senior staff in state health departments, programmer/analysts in industry, and just good old family physicians.
